More things I don’t understand about the world, 3…

Thursday 18 June 2009

Why is it, that in the public eye actors are revered over writers? It’s something I’ve never quite understood. When you author a piece, you create it – out of nothing. Without the writer it wouldn’t exist. The writer creates the world, the characters and everything the characters do and say in that world. If you think that Karl Kennedy, he of Neighbours fame, is a wonderful creation, it isn’t of Alan Fletcher’s doing, it’s down to the writers. Every dan of Doctor Who doesn’t suddenly jump ship when the good Doctor regenerates, leaving the poor old BBC to build a following from scratch.

Yet still, Tom Cruise, or Charlize Theron, or whoever else rides high in the Hollywood charts right now continues to be the one who will sell movies. Sure, you sometimes see ‘from the writer of’ on films, but rather than that being a big draw, it is still weighted with the actors to put bums on seats.

If you look at the world of music, writers get their due praise (though probably still not as much as they should), with classical music being an obvious example of composer reigning over musician. It’s interesting. I wonder why it happens that way? What a lovely, frustrating green world…
